Shortly after this incident I left the production of Mother Courage because I got an offer to play a featured role in a Broadway-bound production starring Gertrude Berg. The show was called Dear Me, the Sky Is Falling. I was to receive billing (which I never got as Jerry’s assistant) and twice the money I was making, so I jumped at it. (Mother Courage, by the way, went on to be one of those legendary Broadway disasters.)

In Dear Me, the Sky Is Falling Ms. Berg played a Jewish mother trying to marry off her daughter to someone she thought was a good catch. The daughter accuses her of interfering with her life, and the mother winds up in a psychiatrist’s office. I played the psychiatrist. The sight of Ms. Berg stretched out on a couch with a young-looking WASP psychiatrist sitting there, listening to her manipulations, turned into two funny scenes. She was a real pro and very funny doing her shtick in the doctor’s office.

Offstage Ms. Berg was kind and thoughtful to me. In fact she gave me permission to leave the show for a week and a half to do a television show in Hollywood. We were in New Haven trying out the play when I asked to be let out; she paused and then said, “You go ahead. But be sure you come back!”

We opened on Broadway to good reviews, and it looked like we were in for a long run. But Ms. Berg became ill, and we soon had to shut down. We were playing at the Mark Hellinger Theatre, and because we had had a huge advance sale they kept the sets in place for months. But Ms. Berg never returned; she died of cancer a few months later.
